Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) today capped its impactful involvement in Ocean Week Brunei, held in conjunction with World Ocean Day.
The launch of World Ocean Day, which is celebrated annually on 8th June, was held at the Fisheries Building in Serasa today and launched by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism.
Since 31st May 2024, Ocean Week Brunei acted as a precursor to the World Ocean Day, with a series of initiatives including youth forums, reef ball fabrication and coral planting, conferences and a clean-up campaign.
Ocean Week Brunei brought together businesses, government agencies, organisations, and schools to address marine conservation challenges and solutions.
As one of the key sponsors of Ocean Week Brunei, BIBD actively supported and participated at various events, with the deployment of 20 reef balls and a beach clean-up campaign among the highlights of the bankās involvement.
Last Sunday, 70 BIBD staff members actively participated in a beach clean-up campaign at Meragang Beach.
This involvement exemplifies BIBD’s dedication to corporate responsibility and community engagement, by actively promoting environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices among its employees and the wider community.
Meanwhile the distribution of 20 reef balls is intended to support sustainable fishing practices and create new fishing zones for local fishing communities, thereby boosting economic activities within the local fishing industry.
BIBDās investment in the reef ball project also aims to support the Brunei Reef Wall project.
This project fosters local expertise by providing training in reef ball creation to youth and fishermen and this empowers them with valuable skills and bolsters the local fishing industry.
This significant initiative underscores BIBD’s dedication to enhancing marine biodiversity and supporting the local community.
The installation of these reef balls is expected to generate a positive socio-economic impact by promoting coral and marine biodiversity activities, which are vital for the health of our oceans and the livelihood of communities.
