A Holistic Approach to Sustainability
Through the BIBD Sustainability Framework, we strive to be a catalyst of change in the nation, by being a responsible business that actively works to make the world a better place.
Maqasid Shariah
As an Islamic financial institution, BIBD has always been guided by the Maqasid Shariah, which speaks to the preservation and promotion of faith, life, the mind, of progeny and of wealth.
Realising that the Maqasid cannot be attained without the support of other objectives, BIBD adopts a Whole of Nation approach, working with the relevant stakeholders in the government, private sector as well as the community, in ensuring that each objective can be attained, leading to the creation of our ideal society.
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
BIBD’s approach to sustainability is strongly aligned with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Through our business activities and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, we will continue to find ways to complement the Government’s efforts to achieve the UN SDGs and Brunei Vision 2035.

BIBD's Sustainability Framework
Launched in October 2021, the BIBD Sustainability Framework marks the Bank’s clear focus and strategic decision to support a wider commitment to sustainability which will be adopted into BIBD’s overall business strategies through 3 pillars, namely Environmental Protection, Responsible Entrepreneurship and Inclusive Social Impact.
The Sustainability Framework is strongly aligned with the Maqasid Shariah – our fundamental principles and values that shape us as an Islamic Financial Institution – and a wider set of principles; the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Supporting these principles is also deeply intertwined with our ‘Bruneian at Heart’ DNA that aims to preserve the well-being of our people and society.

Our Sustainability Initiatives
Beach Clean Up
BIBD continues its commitment to environmental stewardship through regular beach clean-up activities. Our team, alongside community volunteers, actively engages in preserving Bruneiās beautiful coastlines, reducing waste, and promoting a cleaner environment.
Tree Planting & Environmental Conservation
BIBD has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental conservation through various tree planting initiatives. In 2023, the bank participated in several tree planting activities, including those held during the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) and the Mission Green Possible initiative. These efforts align with the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Changeās Net Zero by 2050 goal and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting BIBDās ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability and the preservation of Bruneiās natural landscapes.
Partnership for the Goals
May 2022
BIBD marked a significant milestone by becoming the first private organisation to officially partner with the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change (BDNCCC) through an MOU to cooperate on climate action.
Plastic Free Brunei
As part of our support for the UN SDG’s and complementing the Government’s efforts to achieve Brunei Vision 2035, BIBD regularly undertakes various initiatives to promote sustainability and responsible consumption. This includes distributing reusable items to members of the public to raise awareness on the need to reduce single use plastics. Through these efforts, BIBD aims to encourage a shift toward more environmentally friendly habits, complementing national goals for a sustainable future.
Projek Alam Mampan
BIBD’s Projek Alam Mampan was launched to address environmental sustainability in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project’s first initiative, “660 Roots to a Greener Future,” focuses on SDG 15: Life on Land, with plans to plant trees across Brunei’s four districts. The project will also expand to support World Ocean Day and coral restoration efforts, aligning with SDG 14: Life Below Water.
Coral Restoration
BIBDās coral restoration initiatives include the deployment of reef balls, an essential part of efforts to rebuild and protect Bruneiās coral reefs. These artificial structures provide a stable environment for coral growth, supporting marine biodiversity. During Ocean Week Brunei, BIBD reinforced its commitment to sustainability by collaborating with marine conservationists to implement these measures. This initiative aligns with SDG 14: Life Below Water, highlighting BIBDās role in preserving marine ecosystems.
Shaping the Future: Student Outreach on Sustainability and Finance
BIBD, in collaboration with Shell Exploration and Production Brunei (SEPB), STEP Centre, and Big BWN Project, launched the ‘Waste Not, Save More’ workshop series. This initiative educates students on zero waste practices and financial literacy, aiming to foster environmentally-conscious and financially-savvy youth. The programme, which aligns with BIBD’s Sustainability Framework and Wawasan Brunei 2035, has coveredĀ 15 schools nationwide, promoting sustainability through interactive sessions.
BIBD Sustainability Youth Leadership Award
The BIBD Sustainability Youth Leadership Award is a pioneering initiative that empowers young leaders in Brunei to create a sustainable future. Aligned with the BIBD Sustainability Framework, the award recognises impactful projects in areas like responsible production, sustainable lifestyles, and waste management. It underscores BIBD’s commitment to nurturing future leaders and supporting Brunei Vision 2035 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through this initiative, BIBD inspires youth to actively contribute to building a more sustainable and resilient nation.
