Bibd Launches “Projek Alam Mampan” (Sustainable Nature Project) To Drive Environmental Restoration And Sustainability

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) launched its “Projek Alam Mampan” (Sustainable Nature Project), an ambitious environmental restoration initiative aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This project underscores BIBD’s commitment to a holistic approach towards environmental preservation and restoration.

Projek Alam Mampan aims to address various aspects of environmental sustainability. The “660 Roots to a Greener Future” tree planting initiative, the first initiative being implemented under the project, focuses on SDG 15: Life on Land. The event took place with the planting of 40 trees at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas to commemorate Brunei Darussalam’s 40th National day as well the Bank’s Anniversary.

The ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Minister of Finance and Economy II, and Chairman of BIBD; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Awang Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Home Affairs, and Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid, Minister of Development.

Also in attendance was BIBD’s Managing Director and CEO, Awang Junaidi bin Haji Masri, Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Body, Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries, Senior Government Officials, along with BIBD Board Members and Shariah Advisory Body Members, as well as BIBD senior management and staff.

The 660 Roots initiative will see the trees planted across the four districts of Brunei Darussalam, in collaboration with Green Brunei, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability through education, conservation, and advocacy.

Soon, Projek Alam Mampan will expand to include initiatives supporting World Ocean Day and exploring various coral restoration projects to align with SDG 14: Life Below Water. Through these efforts, BIBD aims to contribute to the preservation and restoration of Brunei’s diverse ecosystems, from land to sea.

Projek Alam Mampan aligns with Brunei Vision 2035, and the nation’s wider commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It underscores BIBD’s support for the Brunei National Climate Change Policy, specifically Protokol Hijau, which focuses on promoting environmentally friendly practices and reducing carbon emissions across various sectors. BIBD supports this protocol by implementing green practices within the bank, promoting sustainable financing as well as digitalisation, and engaging in community projects like the tree planting, coral harvesting and coastal cleanups initiatives to enhance the country’s green cover and biodiversity.

BIBD became the first private sector agency to partner with the Government towards achieving Net Zero by 2050 through the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Brunei National Council on Climate Change in 2021. This partnership signifies the bank’s dedication to environmental stewardship and commitment to contributing positively to the country’s ecological preservation. These efforts underscore the bank’s dedication to act as a responsible business and support other organisations in their pursuit of sustainable goals.
