BIBD recognised as Most Sustainable Financial Institution of the Year in Brunei

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD) has been awarded the Most Sustainable Financial Institution of the Year in Brunei 2023 at the Global Good
Governance (3G) Awards, held in conjunction with the Global Good Governance Summit on 13 May 2025.

The award was presented by Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Riza bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yunus, Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Professor Humayun Dar, Chairman of Cambridge IFA, in recognition of BIBD’s leadership in embedding sustainability across its operations, community engagements, and national development efforts. Receiving the award on behalf of BIBD was Managing Director and CEO, Awang Junaidi bin Haji Masri.

According to Cambridge IFA, “BIBD won the 3G Most Sustainable Financial Institution of the Year in Brunei 2025 at the Global Good Governance Awards 2025. This award is a testament to BIBD’s unwavering commitment to excellence, sustainability and community development. Aligned with Brunei Vision 2035, BIBD continues to champion initiatives that foster a dynamic and sustainable economy. The Bank’s sustainability framework articulates its long-term vision for environmental stewardship and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and demonstrates a strong focus on strategies that promote environmental responsibility, ethical entrepreneurship and inclusive social impact. BIBD’s principles and vision remain firmly rooted in the well-being of people and society, guided by the Maqasid Shariah — which inherently advocates for sustainability.”

Organised by Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) in collaboration with Cambridge IFA, the Global Good Governance Summit convened global thought leaders, institutions, and policymakers under the theme “Transformative Governance for Health, Environment, and Community Sustainability.” BIBD’s participation as one of the event’s main sponsors reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting meaningful platforms that promote ethical leadership and drive sustainable development.

This prestigious recognition underscores BIBD’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, anchored in its Sustainability Framework, which is guided by the
universal objectives of Maqasid Shariah and aligned with Brunei Vision 2035. The framework focuses on three strategic pillars: Responsible Entrepreneurship, Inclusive
Social Impact, and Environmental Protection. These pillars are integrated across the Bank’s business strategy, shaping how BIBD delivers value to customers, stakeholders, and the wider community.
As part of its long-term sustainability agenda, BIBD has committed BND 2 billion in sustainability funding by 2030. This commitment supports initiatives that advance
Brunei’s national climate goals under the Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP), while also contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The funding will enable projects that foster community resilience, promote inclusive economic participation, and accelerate the nation’s transition to a more sustainable
and climate-conscious future.

BIBD’s approach to sustainability is also reflected in its community outreach programmes, which aims to deliver long-term, meaningful impact. Through its flagship
CSR initiative BIBD ALAF, the Bank supports access to quality education for underprivileged youth, contributing to social mobility and human capital development.
Women’s empowerment is championed through BIBD SEED, which provides underserved women with the skills, financial literacy, and support systems needed to build
sustainable businesses. Complementing these efforts, Projek Tunas offers training and mentorship for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those operating home-based
businesses, helping to nurture Brunei’s grassroots economy.

Environmental protection remains a key priority in BIBD’s operations. In 2024, BIBD installed a 60kWp solar photovoltaic system at its headquarters, reducing its carbon
emissions by approximately 50 metric tons annually which is equivalent to the impact of planting 750 trees each year. The Bank also launched Projek Alam Mampan, a
community-based environmental programme through which 660 trees were planted across all four districts of Brunei Darussalam. These initiatives reflect BIBD’s
commitment to environmental stewardship and its support for Brunei’s green agenda.

Youth engagement is another important focus, as seen through the BIBD Sustainability Youth Leadership Awards. This initiative empowers students to take ownership of
sustainability challenges and propose innovative, actionable solutions. It represents the Bank’s belief in the transformative potential of youth to shape a better, more
sustainable future.

On the banking front, BIBD continues to promote digital innovation as part of its sustainability strategy. By encouraging the use of platforms such as the BIBD NEXGEN
Wallet, the Bank offers customers a more convenient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional banking. In addition to receiving the award, BIBD’s Assistant Head of Government Relations and Special Projects, Dayangku Rodzi binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, played a key role at the summit as the moderator for the panel discussion titled “Strengthening Institutions for Community Well-being and Sustainability.” The session explored governance strategies and institutional models that can help build more inclusive, resilient communities in the face of evolving global challenges.

BIBD’s recognition at the 3G Summit reaffirms its position as a Partner in Progress for Brunei Darussalam, working hand in hand with stakeholders to support national
priorities, empower communities, and advance sustainability at every level of its operations.
