BIBD marks 30 years of Islamic Banking

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) today held a mass prayer and thanksgiving doa at the Jame’ Asr’ Hassanil Bokiah Mosque in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Islamic Banking in Brunei Darussalam, marking three decades of contribution and progress to the landscape of the Islamic Banking industry in particular, and to the economic development of the country in general.

Present at the event was Minister of Finance and Economy II and Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Awang Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah in his capacity as Chairman of BIBD as well as Assistant State Mufti (Buhuth) at the State Mufti’s Office, Yang Mulia Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mazanan bin Haji Yusof who is also Chairman of BIBD’s Shariah Advisory Body.

Also in attendance were members of BIBD’s Board, Shariah Advisory Body, senior management, staff as well as retired employees from the BIBD Group.

This date is of special significance as it was on 13 January 1993 that His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam paved the way for the Islamic Banking industry in Brunei Darussalam with the announcement of the conversion of the International Bank of Brunei into the Islamic Bank of Brunei (IBB). In 2005, by the consent of His Majesty the Sultan, IBB merged with the Islamic Development Bank of Brunei (IDBB) to create BIBD.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Awang Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah said, “Alhamdulillah, over the last thirty years, we have witnessed the progression and advancement of the Islamic Financial sector, aligned with His Majesty’s vision of transforming Brunei Darussalam into a world-renowned Islamic Finance hub.”

He added, “We are humbled and deeply grateful to our valued customers,  and to the people of Brunei Darussalam for embracing Islamic Banking and making it an important part of their lives. At the same time, we would also like to acknowledge the contributions of all those who have been instrumental in the successful development and growth of Islamic Banking over the past three decades. We will continue to harness our commitment as your partner, expand our outreach to our customers and the community we serve and progress forward together, In Shaa Allah.”

Attendees at the event performed mass Sunat Hajat and Fardhu Asar prayers, followed by the recital of Selawat Tafrijiyyah by BIBD ALAF students. The event concluded with a doa selamat in conjunction with the 30th anniversary milestone.

Over the past 30 years, BIBD has continued its commitment of contributing to Brunei Darussalam’s nation-building efforts as the custodian of the Islamic banking industry. The Bank has a long-standing history of supporting the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in achieving Brunei Vision 2035, both through its business practices as well as the Bank’s community-based initiatives such as BIBD SEED and BIBD ALAF. BIBD has also been a strong supporter of the development of local MSMEs through its SME360 service and the Community for Brunei.
